Is There a Baldness Cure?

By L.S. Schneider

For centuries men have been trying to solve the problem of premature baldness and hair loss. There are mentions of hair loss solutions in some of the ancient Greek teachings and there are even hieroglyphics that have been found in Egyptian tombs on the subject. One of these paintings from about 3500 years ago shows a man being treated with a concoction purported to increase hair growth. But after all these years, men are still being humiliated by having bald spots.

Science has done a good job of explaining what causes baldness in men. The majority of people who suffer from this problem have a condition known as Androgenetic Alopecia which is also called male pattern baldness in layman's terms. This condition is caused by a hormonal element called DHT that affects the hair follicles and causes them to stop producing hair shaft material. This does not happen over night. Usually a man will experience thinning hair for a few years before it gets to the point that he has a bald spot. Over this time the DHT bonds with the hair follicles and causes it to slow down production of the hair. As the hair follicle is weakened more and more, the hair shafts become thinner and eventually break off and fall out. Once enough hair follicles have been affected the man experiences a bald spot in that area of his scalp.

There are several treatments to slow down the affect of DHT on the hair and some are very effective. The problem is, once the hair follicle has be weakened to the point that it can no longer support hair growth no product can cause it to start production again. Generally the follicle will become encased in fibrotic material.

Once a man's hair falls out from this problem the only really effective option is to replace the hair follicles that have been rendered useless. The best way to do this is to transplant growing hair from one area of the patient's head to the balding area. This is known as a hair implantation or a hair transplantation procedure. Luckily, most men do not lose their hair on the back of the head when they are suffering from male pattern baldness. The cosmetic surgeon can simply remove the hair units from this area and place them into the scalp where they are needed. The hair follicles can now begin to produce natural hair to match the hair surrounding the former bald spot. This hair can continue to grow for years to come with no further treatment.
