Is a Cure For Baldness in the Cards

Baldness issues have been plaguing man probably since the beginning of time. In fact, a recent discovery found that the Ancient Egyptians were dealing with the embarrassment of hair loss over 5500 years ago. A hieroglyph from 3500 BC was found in a tomb showing a hair loss remedy being applied to the scalp of a noble and it even contained part of the recipe. So, as you see, finding a cure for baldness has been important for millennia.

We are closer to having a cure at this time than we have ever been before. The FDA has approved two drugs that treat hair loss. Although they are most effective at keeping the hair you have, they do promote some re-growth of hair from follicles that have stopped producing Keratin the hair shaft material. Both of these drugs deal with the male pattern baldness problem of excessive DHT levels which is the substance that
attacks the hair follicles. The first drug, Finasteride, actually limits the amount of DHT in the blood stream. This is very effective for men but it is not prescribed to women for fear of birth defects. The second drug is Minoxidil and it is used safely by both men and women. This drug is applied to the scalp twice a day and it helps to stop the DHT from bonding to receptors on the hair roots or follicles.

Another option that can be considered a cure for baldness is hair restoration surgery. With this procedure a cosmetic surgeon will actually remove existing, growing hair from one area of the scalp and transplant it to the balding area. This surgery works very well for men suffering from male pattern baldness because there is generally no hair loss at the posterior area of the head. It is easy to remove hair follicles from here with very little noticeable scarring. The surgeon can then implant the individual follicles individually which allows for optimum directional placement to match the growth direction of the surrounding hair. These transplanted hairs will then grow for years to come just like your youthful hair did.

Another potential baldness treatment is in trials in BC Canada. Called Trichoscience Cellular Replication, this method involves using genetic engineering to actually jump start the hair restoration procedure. This method has not been approved yet but early trials are very promising.
